7 Common Resume Mistakes That Are Easy to Fix

7 Common Resume Mistakes That Are Easy to Fix 7 Common Resume Mistakes That Are Easy to Fix Your resume acts as a standing record of your career history. It can be the reason you land a gig, or get passed on by. If you want to know how to improve your chances of getting an interview and ultimately a job, a good place to start is by avoiding some of the most common resume mistakes.Theyre easy to fix, and the few minutes spent improving them will be well worth your time. Lets take a look at seven common resume mistakes and what to do to fix them.7 Common Resume Mistakes That Are Easy to Fix1. Writing an ObjectiveObjective statements, which were a sentence or two at the top of a resume declaring your goals, have become outdated. Objective statements are out of date. Your resume will automatically look mora current by including a summary of qualifications instead, said Toni Frana, one of expert career coaches. Writing an objective statement focuses on what you, the employee, are looking for. What you want to show instead is what key skills you have for the role to which you are applying so the hiring manager can start to visualize you in the role.Think of a summary of qualifications as a title for your resume where you list your most impressive facts years of experience, areas of expertise, keys skills (soft and technical), and descriptors of your work style.2. Not Updating Your ResumeAelendher common mistake applicants make is including a summary of qualifications and a list of skills on their resume that doesnt match the opportunity for which theyre applying.Candidates should always customize their resume to the job at hand, so that the hiring manager doesnt have to try to make a leap to understand why theyre even applying or interested in the job. Its far better to state a clear and consistent message that the job youre applying for is something you want to do and are qualified to do.You can start by focusing on keywords from the job description that apply to yo u and your skills. Without stuffing or adding fluff, add these keywords to your resume where applicable. If a job wants three to five years experience and you have four, list that in your summary of qualifications for a quick punch of information that shows youre qualified.3. Focusing on Tasks, Not AccomplishmentsTurning your resume into a list of tasks and duties is a common resume mistake you dont want to make. While it isimportant to list the things you are responsible for at your job, it is possibly mora important to include your accomplishments. Simply listing tasks can be frustrating to the hiring manager, too.Accomplishments tell an employer that you get the job done. Listing your daily tasks and responsibilities isnt as powerful as sharing the results of the work that you do said Frana.Sure, you may be responsible for selling your companys product to consumers, but saying that youre the third top seller on your team will catch a hiring managers attention quicker. Look at the bullet points on your resume and consider how you can reword them to show your accomplishments and successes. For exampleDo thisIncreased department revenues by 30%, decreased costs by 18%Instead of thisImplemented changes to increase revenues and decrease costs in the department4. Using Stale BuzzwordsHard working. Team player. Motivated. Raise your hand if youve included any of these words on your resume Words like these become buzzwords because they are used so often and by so many people. Hiring managers are likely to glaze right over these words when they see them in every resume.Avoid this common resume mistake and think about ways to refresh your resume without these tired tropes. Sometimes the best way to do that is by showing your skills through your accomplishments, just like mentioned earlier. Instead of saying you are a team player, mention a team project you worked on and use some action verbs to show and elend tell. Also consider industry-specific buzzwords you may us e as well and determine if theres fresher or newer ways to say the same thing.5. Not Leaving Enough White SpaceMost experts recommend keeping your resume to one or two pages. Anything longer than two pages is going to overwhelm a hiring manager and likely be a strike against you. With limited space, it can be difficult to fit everything, especially if youre a seasoned worker. While it may be tempting to decrease your font size and widen those margins, dont.Since hiring managers read through a lot of resumes you want yours to be visually appealing to the eye, rather than too wordy. Aim to include the most relevant information for the hiring manger to envision you in the specific role. In addition, you want your font to be the appropriate size. Managing both guarantees the appropriate amount of content and white space that will make it easy on the hiring manager to notice your wonderful accomplishments, offered Frana.6. Dont Forget to ProofreadYes, this is a sentiment that is expresse d over and over and over again. There is a reason for that. Its tough for an employer to be confident in your attention to detail or to believe you take pride in your work when there are grammatical, spelling, or formatting issues in your application. Better yet, haveat leastone person you trustproofread your resume.7. Not Following InstructionsAs soon as a job seeker ignores those requests, they have a strike against them. And its often a companys first impression of the candidate. Its a clear indication of not paying attention to details and/or not being very serious about contending for the role. Simply not following instructions is another one of the more common resume mistakes that can be avoided by just taking a little extra time and care. The bottom line is that companies want to hire people who show attention to detail, consistency, and passion for the job from day one. By making sure you dont include these seven common resume mistakes, youll be setting yourself up for succes s.If youre looking for resume pointers and career guidance, can help. How to tap your network and ask for help

How to tap your network and ask for helpHow to tap your network and ask for helpEvery couple of years I find myself at a career inflection point that fork-in-the-road feeling of bedrngnislage knowing which path to take next. The older I get, the less these periods of self-doubt and spinning my wheels completely unravel me, because Im able to see them for what they are an opportunity to push back on inertia, evaluate my options, and move forward mindfully.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe best way Ive found support in moving past these pivot points is through powerful conversation with people I admire. Whether its meeting with mentors and advisors or folks Ive met more recently whose careers I admire, the way I tap into my network and ask for help is the same. Its all about respecting peoples time and their willingness to share it with you. After the publication ofthe Bossed Up B ook, Ive been feeling a bit aloof myself. Its completely expected after completing a massive goal that Ive been striving towards for years, and to navigate whatevers next for me and Bossed Up, Ive been reaching out to a whole bunch of mentors lately to discuss where I might go from here.Heres how I reach out to my network and ask for help1. Ask fortimeWhen I reach out for support, I start with a brief email asking my mentor for their most precious resource some time on their calendar. I never ask the big burly questions Im wrestling with in the body of the email itself, but instead give them a sense as to why I value their perspective and would love time to connect.Heres a recent email I sent to a former professor of mine (whose name Ive changed)Subj Hey David Coffee?Hey David I hope this email finds you well.Im wondering if you might have time in the next few weeks to bestattungs a virtual coffee via video chat. Id love to catch up properly, and Id especially love your insights as I come up on nearly 7 years of pursuing Bossed Up.Im starting to feel like Ive hit something of a growth ceiling and would love your thoughts on how I can ensure Im continuing to set myself up for long-term growth and maximum impact.Im just now beginning to think about whats next for me and Bossed Up and would so appreciate the perspective of someone like you whos been so instrumental at various points in my career thus far and whose own career I admire so muchIf youre down to share a half hour or so of your time, let me know when works best for youMy best,EmilieKeep it short, be specific about how much time youre asking for, and allude to what youre looking to discuss.2. Do your homeworkIn preparing for these conversations, I always take a few minutes to review the online profiles of the folks Im about to speak with. David recently published another book and spoke on MSNBC, so you can bet I wanted to read up on all his latest and greatest happenings, both partieally and professio nally. This helps me connect partieally with the appropriate congratulations at the top of our call, of course, and it also helps inform the questions I might prepare to ask. For instance, had I not seen his MSNBC appearance, I wouldnt have known to ask how he got invited on the network. In the age of social media algorithms, its not always easy to passively keep up to date with your friends and mentors, so do your due diligence before your call so you can show youre keeping up with whats happening in their life and career, too.3. Be honest about your challengesAsking for help is a vulnerable act, which makes it uncomfortable for many of us. But keep in mind acknowledging that youre dissatisfied or frustrated doesnt detract from your achievements thus far. Im incredibly proud of the work I do here at Bossed Up, but that doesnt mean I cant strive for more and maintain ambitions beyond what Ive already done.So when reaching out for help, its important to be as clear as possible about w hats got you down. Dont get caught in the perfectionistic trap of saying everythings fine or downplaying your challenges. Articulate them, so the person on the other end of the line can help.If youre having trouble putting your finger on exactly whats got you feeling bummed, try tapping into envy instead. Who do you have a career crush on? Who do you want to be more like? What about them do you admire? Sharing those details can help the person whos trying to help you get a better understanding of where youre at and where youd like to go, which can spur their suggestions and ideas for what to do next.4. Listen activelyOnce youve articulated your challenges, resist the temptation to manage the conversation too much from there. Let your mentor or friend spitball some ideas and listen carefully to truly understand what theyre trying to share with you. Ask follow-up questions like, What do you mean by that? and Can you tell me more? to get them to expand on their advice and share more of how theyve learned from their own experiences. Its ok for these conversations to be meandering. Its not about landing on a solution right away, its about exploring options and following your curiosity. Dont feel the need to land on a perfect finish line, consider this a start to a broader exploratory conversation, one that can continue via email and future meetups as well.5. Follow upAfter you meet up, make sure tosend a thank-you note or giftto show your appreciation and keep in touch as you make progress on your career journey. Send an occasional email update or follow-up question to keep the ideas flowing and as always, look out for opportunities for mutual support.Be specific about how youre acting on what your contact shared with you. How have you taken their advice to heart? How are you moving forward? Or still feeling stuck? Loop back with them either way, just be considerate about not constantly asking for one persons time. When navigating a career inflection point, hearing from lots of different perspectives you respect can help you move forward. This article first appeared on Bossed Up.

Even the happiest of couples do not always agree on everything, which can be particularly true when it comes to money and business. The following tips can help create a mora harmonious working relationship with your spouse- and may even help create a stronger marriage, too. Be Nice to Your Partner Treat your spouse with the same- or even higher- level of courtesy and respect as you would anyone else with whom you work. Be flexible in your ideas and ways, and expect to compromise more than you would with an unrelated co-worker.? Listen to Your Partner Avoid arguments with this one simple act. Even if you disagree with the idea, always let your partner finish expressing the thought. If you cut him or her shortor are quick to criticize, you are likely to start a shouting match. Understa nd Your Partners Business Style A contributing factor to creatingconflict can be the difference in howpartners make business decisions. One may be more guided by facts rather than by the emotional components that often need to be factored into family-owned business decisions. One of you may be good at problem-solving. The other may be less likely to compromise or concede to different solutions. Despite your disagreement, try to understand your partners viewpoint and concerns. Help Your Partner According to Azriela Jaffe, author of Permission to Prosper What Working Wives Crave From Their Husbands- and How to Get It, couples are more likely to succeed when one spouse simply pitches in to help the other rather than when business roles are equal. Jaffe estimates that only approximately 5 percent of couples who enter into full partnership businesses succeed. tischset Aside Business-Free Time It is impossible to leave it at the office when your homeisyour office. But you still n eed to spend time enjoying being a couple. It is important to remember that you are together for many reasons- not just for a business.Have rules such as no business talk at dinner, or schedulea weekly date night with your spouse. And if your business is in your home, consider renting office space to differentiate your work and home lives. When Not to Work With Your Spouse If your marriage is already rocky, working together is like having a child in an attempt to renew the marriage It does not work, and you end up with even more complications and reasons to disagree than before. Also, if you are already struggling with the business, pulling in your spouse to save the day is not a good idea. That move puts pressure on the spouse to solve problems that you could not. If your partnerdoes solve them, you may even become resentful because your spouse welches successful at something you failed to accomplish. On the other hand, if your spouse cant solve the problem, you may place blame elsewhere for a mess you created in the first place. Only go into business with your spouse because you have planned to do so and you both want to work together. If you need someone to help you save your business, hire a business consultant or find a mentor. Let your spouse help in other areas that dont involve your business.

5 Signs You Need to Hire a Resume Writer

5 Signs You Need to Hire a Resume Writer 5 Signs You Need to Hire a Resume WriterPosted November 19, 2018, by JennyIf youve decided to look for a new job, then the future can feel precarious. The last thing you want to do is shell out money for services you dont need. Yet, hiring a professional resume writer could be just what you need to get a new job. The magic they weave with your resume could even help you get an interview for your dream job. If you think that dream job is out of your reach, you could very well be wrong. What is a resume writer?Professional resume writers take your education, work experience, and skills and craft them into the perfect resume. First impressions count. A resume writer can help you grab the attention of the hiring managers, get your foot in the door and the chance to progress to the next stage of the hiring process. How then do you know if you need to bite the bullet and pay for the services of a resume writer? You know you need to hire a professional resume writer if one of the following scenarios sounds familiar1 - You have trouble blowing your own trumpetMarketing yourself isnt your thing, and you struggle to write about your own accomplishments. Not everyone finds writing about themselves easy. Im a professional writer and I HATE to write my own Bio. Yup, even those of us who write for a living can find writing about ourselves hard. There is no shame in this, and sometimes getting an outside perspective can be a great confidence boost, and at the same time, they can help you frame your accomplishments in the best possible (and most professional) way.2 - You have been fishing for work for a long timeTime has been flying by, and you have actually lost count of the number of applications you have filled in and resumes you have sent. And despite all this hard work from your part, which has included spending lots of time tweaking, spell checking and reworking your resume, you havent been offered any interviews. If this sounds like you, then using a professional resume writer may help you identify what your resume is missing, hence why you may not be getting any interview offers. Sometimes when we are bogged down in a document we have created, we fail to see the bigger picture. Getting an outsider perspective on your career and achievements so far, and how youve approached your resume could very well help you to turn everything around and start getting some interviews.3 - You need to fill in the gapsSometimes for various reasons, we end up with gaps in our employment. Whether you were off travelling the world, or at home raising children behauptung things you have been doing instead of working arent disadvantages. Your experiences make you who you are. Along the way you have developed your character and unique skills which perhaps other candidates havent. A professional resume writer knows how to present these gaps on your resume so the hiring managers see your gaps as advantages too.4 - You have changed jobs a lot and dont know how best to present this pattern When you have changed jobs frequently, then sometimes this can give the hiring manager the impression you wont stay long or commit to the job you are applying for. This isnt necessarily the case, and I am aya there were valid reasons behind each change. A professional resume writer knows how to present your work history in a positive light and doing this well can get you through to the interview stage.5 - Youre just not a writerAnd that doesnt mean you cant do your job very well, it just means words aint your thang. Thats okay, know when to get the pros in You are good at your job, and you have many valuable skills but that doesnt mean you can write well. A professional resume writer uses their writing skills and knowledge of the job market to help you express yourself in a compelling way in just two pages. Why struggle alone when there are people ready to put their skills into action and help you shine on paper? How to choose a r esume writer?Once youve decided you want to use a resume writer then the next question is how to choose one? Well, make sure you check their credentials. There is a range of different qualifications resume writers can pursue, from basic certifications to Masters level. Many will specialise in a particular field. Conduct some research to see if there are particular resume writing qualifications relevant to your industry and niche. Once you have someone in mind have a look at their portfolio and ask about the success rates of their clients. Finally, ask them if they have any reviews or feedback from

5 ways to better handle a see-saw narcissist at work

5 ways to better handle a landsee-saw narcissist at work5 ways to better handle a see-saw narcissist at workHaving a narcissist in your work circle can have you scratching your head and wondering if they like you or are if they manipulating you. Its a guessing game as their messages are often a mix of fake kindness or direct ridicule. Its common for narcissists to see-saw back and forth. When they want you to feel valued they treat you as special, but when you decline their requests or fail to agree with them, suddenly youre on their bad side.Weve asked experts for their take on how to level the playing field to better handle unpredictable, narcissistic coworkers.Recognize their gameIts both confusing and frustrating to feel like youre in someones good favor one day and treated like the enemy the next. But its important to recognize whats going on when youre dealing with a narcissist, says Amy Morin, a psychotherapist and author of 13 Things Mentally Strong People Dont Do.She recommen ds to take a step back and look at how you as well as other people in the office have been treated over time. The part who is hailed a hero at one meeting might be blamed for ruining the entire company at the next meeting, Morin adds.Dont take anything personallyMorin says dont waste your energy trying to figure out what you did wrong or what you need to do to fix the situation.A narcissist doesnt look at situations the same way you do so your logic wont apply, she explains. Remind yourself that the situation reflects how the narcissist feels about themselves, rather than how others perceive you. When the narcissist feels good, theyre likely to hold you in high regard to others, but, says Morin, the minute they start feeling bad, they wont hesitate to put you down, even when youve done nothing wrong.Resist the urge to win good favorOnce youve cracked the code about what makes the narcissist hold someone in high regard, it can be tempting to try and win good favor. But doing so is a waste of time, Morin says. You wont be held in high esteem for very long, she adds. Its like trying to get ahead in a game where your opponent is cheating. All your effort will only get you so far - and it will backfire in the end.Focus on doing your bestRegardless of whether your efforts are praised or noticed, continue to do your best. Your job isnt to win favor, but instead, its to do your work to the best of your ability, says Morin. At the end of each day, ask yourself if you did your best. When you put your energy into the right place, youll experience less distress about the rollercoaster of emotions that can come with working with a narcissist, says Morin.Realize you cant change themThe one immutable truth when it comes to narcissists is that they cannot be changed, says Matthew Kelly, CEO of FLOYD Consulting, who also has an upcoming book The Culture Solution, published by Blue Sparrow Books to be released in January 2019. The see-saw narcissist at work, turns on and off, i f for you and then against you for two reasons massive insecurity and the lack of object constancy. He or she doesnt actually see you as a real person, but rather as a conglomerate of various people from his or her past and imagination, Kelly says. The bottom line in their mind is you cannot be trusted and are unreliable. The reality is they are unreliable and cannot be trusted.

You can probably have your old job back, 94% of managers say

You can probably have your old job back, 94% of managers sayYou can probably have your old job back, 94% of managers sayWhen companies search for new hires, they can often find no better candidates than former employees.A new Accountemps survey found that 94% of senior managers would consider re-hiring a former employee. In this market, where its so hard to find talent, if youre a hiring manager and youve got a person who left in good standing thats familiar with your culture, familiar with the processes of the organization, and they did a good job for you hiring managers tend to be pretty enthused about bringing back a person like that, Michael Steinitz, executive director of Accountemps, told Ladders.Thats whats makes a former employee so attractive. They know the ins and outs, theyre essentially trained, and you know what youre getting, Steinitz said. Ideally, a boomerang employee somebody who has left a company and then come back is someone you didnt want to leave the first tim e.Expect to go through the same formal interview process that everyone else goes through, not to get in the back door. One of the bigger differences, when youre re-hiring someone, is that youve really got to dive into why the person left the first time, said Steinitz. Potential boomerang employees should be as honest as possible here, so that past problems dont become future ones. However, according to the survey, only 52% of workers were likely to apply for a position at a previous company, citing reasons like unhappiness with management (22%), a badeanstalt culture fit (17%), and unfulfilling job duties (13%).There are a myriad of reasons why former employees left the first time and why they wouldnt be interested in going back Some people dont want to go back to something they already know theyd rather keep moving forward. If youve been offered a position at an old job or are thinking of going back, think hard as to the reasons you left in the first place. If the reason you left cou ld be changed like replacing a bad manager with a new one consider going back. But if the conditions around your departure are still the same, tread carefully. You just have to be very honest with yourself to make sure youre not putting yourself in the same position, Steinitz said.
